December 2015

In 2015, Cottonwood sent the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service a 60-Day Notice of Intent to Sue for failing to prepare a Recovery Plan for the Winkler pincushion cactus. The Winkler is a small flowering cacti, which can retract entirely into the ground during the winter and dry seasons. The Winkler is only found in the high desert of south-central Utah.

Livestock grazing, climate change, and other habitat disturbances threaten the Winkler Pincushion Cactus.

In response to Cottonwood’s Notice of Intent to Sue, the federal government agreed to prepare a Recovery Plan. The Recovery Plan will help ensure adequate regulatory mechanisms are put in place to protect and restore the species.
